Community Outreach:
Since resuming our operations on October 15, 2005, Kingsley House staff have connected over 20,000 individuals of all ages with essential services and resources to aid in their recovery and healing. Children and families have been linked to the comprehensive array of programs at Kingsley House, as well as other vital programs and services being provided by other organizations throughout the greater New Orleans area.
Preschool and Early Head Start:
For over 100 years, Kingsley House has been at the forefront of early education and quality child care in Louisiana. In fact, Kinglsey House launched the very first kindergarten and summer school programs in the state. Our nationally accredited, historic Preschool and Early Head Start programs currently provide a dynamic, comprehensive array of academic and social enrichment activities, along with essential health and supportive services for 192 children and their families. With a wait list that has grown to over 800 children, we continue our diligent efforts to add more early education space to our existing facilities, as well as the potential for new classroom construction to accommodate the needs of these children and their families.
Adult Services:
The Kingsley House Adult Services Program is open to senior citizens and to medically disabled adults. Our participants enjoy stimulating recreational and socialization activities, and are provided two nutritious meals and a snack each day. Currently, our 71 adults have a safe and secure place to spend their day, while caregivers work or attend to housing, insurance, and other important resettlement matters. Monitoring of health-care is provided by our nursing staff, social workers provide case management services and transportation is available. This licensed program has a capacity for 75 adults. We expect the demand for the service to increase as more residents return to the city.
Mobile Medical Unit:
Kingsley House has partnered with The Children's Health Fund and Tulane University School of Medicine to offer free medical services aboard the Mobile Medical Unit. Children can receive vaccinations, flu shots, care of acute and chronic medical problems and prescription refills. This service is currently available once a week and has been expanded to include mental health services for children and youth.
Health Insurance and Food Stamp Application Assistance:
Health Care For All (HCFA) at Kingsley House has assisted over 2,500 families with completing and submitting Medicaid and Food Stamp applications and has replaced vital documents for over 1,500 individuals. In addition, HCFA staff are completing community family needs assessments to determine the specific immediate and long term needs of persons returning to the city and making referrals to appropriate Kingsley House and external programs as needed.
Individual and Family Counseling:
Kingsley House Family Life Services offers free individual and family counseling by master's level counselors and therapists for persons needing support and assistance. Counseling can either take place at the agency or can be provided at the individual's or family's home. Services available include: Family Therapy, Conflict Resolution, Communication Skills, Resource Coordination, Life Management Skills, Advocacy, and Parenting Skills.
River Parishes Family Resource Center (La Place):
The Kingsley House River Parishes Family Resource Center offers an array of programs and services to assist children and families in St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Charles and Ascension parishes, including counseling, case management, parent education, parent support groups, after school day care and summer camp. The Center also offers school-based anger management and bullying abatement programs to children and adolescents, which has been especially helpful post-Katrina.
Youth Services:
Kingsley House once again provided our historic full day summer camp for 250 children ages 5 - 12 in 2007. Our full day camp activities included indoor and outdoor sports and recreation, drama, arts and crafts, swimming, individaul and group counseling, academic enrichment (with a special focus on math and reading), computer literacy, drug and violence prevention education, and weekly field trips to fun and exciting locations throughout the area.
After School and Teen Program:
Kingsley House continues to provide daily after school tutoring, mentoring, drug and violence prevention, group counseling, recreation and socialization activities to children ages 5 to 12. We have established linkages to both the Recovery School District and Orleans Parish schools to provide these essential and much needed activities to school aged children and youth. Kingsley House is also enabling teens from the surrounding Lower Garden District/Irish Channel area to receive academic tutoring and have full access to the gym and computer center from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. each night. In addition, children and teens are able to enjoy full use of the facilities on Saturdays throughout the year. More than 70 teens continue to participate in our program daily.
